The new
academic year is nearly upon us. For many young people, the next few weeks will
be filled with bag packing and looking forward to new adventures, with many
students heading to university for the first time from across the UK – and even
further afield.
The number of
international students heading to Higher Education institutes in the UK is
steadily on the rise. In 2012 – 2013, there were 425, 265 students from outwith
the UK studying at universities within the country. Of those students, 106,060
came from other countries within the EU, and 268, 245 were non-EU students.
These numbers made up 15% of all full time first degree students, 71% of full
time taught postgraduates and 49% of full time research students.
The largest
numbers of non-EU students come to the UK from China, India, Nigeria, the USA
and Malaysia, whilst the top EU countries sending students to study here are
Germany, Ireland, France, Greece and Cyprus. International students contribute
a great deal to the UK's economy, with international students spending £10.2
billion on tuition fees and living expenses in 2011 – 2012. But they also
enhance the cultural life of the UK, bringing in other cultures and experiences
to enrich the lives of the home students they study alongside.
If you're an
