Mobile phone sales take dip

Mobile phone sales have dropped for the first time in almost two years, new figures have revealed. Research conducted by Gartner, a leading IT research and advisory firm shows sales are down by two per cent year-on-year for the first quarter of 2012. The analyst house said it is likely to have to adjust its forecasts for the rest of the year.

The dip in worldwide sales has largely been put down to declining sales in the Far East. This could imply that most people who want and can afford a mobile phone already own handsets.

"Global sales of mobile devices declined more than expected due to a slowdown in demand from the Asia/Pacific region," principal research analyst Anshul Gupta said in a statement. "The first quarter, traditionally the strongest quarter for Asia — which is driven by Chinese New Year, saw a lack of new product launches from leading manufacturers, and users delayed upgrades in the hope of better smartphone deals arriving later in the year."

This could mean good news for consumers as retailers try to sell off the backlog of stock. "Gartner expects some of this volume to be sold during the next couple of quarters, because the channel is likely to lower the prices to dispose of the stock," the advisory firm stated.

Samsung came first in the competition for most sales, knocking Nokia off the top spot it's held on to since 1998. Apple came in third.
